According to a recent study conducted at University of Missouri, mothers suffering from depression tend to take longer to respond to her child’s back and forth dialogue. Researchers at MU School of Health Professionals examined audio recordings of more than 100 families involved in Early Head Start Program. Early Head Start is a federal child development program for children whose family income is at or below poverty line. Researchers found out the time gap in the conversations between depressed moms and their children.
Nicholas Smith, assistant professor and researcher on the study said, “We found that the time gap in between responses, in general, gets shorter between mother and child as the child ages, and we also found the mom’s timing tended to predict the child’s timing and vice versa.”
